Brewery Holsten, founded in Hamburg in 1879, got its name from the Germanic tribe, who lived in the historic area of land Holstein (Holstein), located in the southern part of the modern German state of Schleswig-Holstein. With historical roots connected and remain unchanged logo - a knight on horseback, medieval heraldic symbol Holstein. The rapid development and fast growing popularity of beer Holsten led to the fact that the brewery has become not only a leader in his own country, but in 1901 established the first production subsidiary abroad, in London. By 1927, the brewery had to expand and modernize the main plant in Hamburg, and also acquired a number of breweries in the area. Having suffered considerable damage from bombing during the Second World War, managed to recover only Holsten by 1953. In the next 50 years, the brewery has strengthened its market position by acquiring a number of breweries in different regions of Germany and entered into a licensing agreement for the production of beer under its own brand abroad. In 2004, a controlling stake in the company acquired the Danish brewery concern Carlsberg Group, which greatly strengthened the position of Holsten in international markets. Holsten beer today is the leader of the beer market in Northern Germany with a share of about 20% of total beer consumption.
